I did the “Curl Keeper Challenge”- check out my curls!

Thanks to Tryazon, the great sampling program I belong to that enables me to try and review excellent products (and you should join, too! Go to www.tryazon.com to sign up), I recently had the opportunity to take part in the 3-day #CurlKeeperChallenge using two Curl Keeper Products: The Original Curl Keeper Liquid Styler, and their new Refresh with Hold Styling Spray, and host a Facebook Live Party to show off my results! I was sent Curl Keeper's “Style & Refresh” Kit, which includes the Original Liquid Styler, Refresh with Hold Styling Spray, a water mist spray bottle, a Flexy Brush, and samples of the Original Liquid Styler for my Party attendees!

I started the Curl Keeper Challenge by washing my hair on Friday as I usually do, and then combing the Original Liquid Styler thru my hair using the Flexy Brush. Then I “scrunched” my hair into curls, and styled it as usual, which, for me, meant simply “plopping” it in a Turbi Twist and sleeping on it! And yes, I woke up the next morning to curls!
For the next three days, all I did was spray my hair with water and Refresh Spray, comb it thru with the Flexy Brush, and scrunch it back into curls... and yes, as you can see from the photos below of my Facebook Live Party on Sunday, my curls lasted for 3 days, without my having to shampoo again!
The water and Refresh sprays reactivate the Curl Keeper Liquid Styler, and enable you to keep those curls going without having your hair turn into a mass of unruly frizz!

I have always been a pretty “low maintenance” gal with regards to hair styling: Even in my “heyday”, when I had an art gallery in NYC in the mid-1990s, and had to be pretty darn chic every single day, I had my curly hair cut short and chic so I could literally wake up, shake my head, and dash out the door! And although I have Lots of hair styling tools, including blow-dryers, a curling iron, a flat iron, and a straightening brush, I almost never use them... because 1) I am lazy as sin, and 2) I stink at using them. LOL I have friends who have been blow-drying their hair since 1975 and can do it in their sleep, but I stank at it in 1975 and I still stink at it. LOL I am convinced that you have to be double-jointed to be able to properly blow-dry or iron the hair at the back of your head. LOL When I go to a salon I always ask for a cut that can be worn curly AND straight, and I always have them blow and iron my hair into glass-like smoothness, as I know I will almost never do that at home. LOL

How I got my Naturally Curly Hair is another Story... I was not born with curly hair. My hair was always straight as a board and fine, and wouldn't even hold a curl set with rollers and Dippity-Do. So when I hit my teens in the 1970s, I did what my mom had been doing since she was a child in the 1920s and Shirley Temple's curls were all the rage: I got it permed. If you are my age (61) you will well-recall that Big Curly Hair was very “in” ca. 1975: everyone from Disco Queen Donna Summer to Barbra Streisand had Big Curly Hair- and so did I!

And then when I was 29, in 1988, I got really sick with Pancreatitis and almost died... and lost my hair. All of it. I had no hair, no eyelashes, no eyebrows, nothing- for 6 truly ghastly months. For 6 months I wore a wig and penciled in my eyebrows and prayed my hair would grow back... And when it grew back- which, thank G-d, it did- it grew in CURLY! I was over the moon! I felt like the little girl in the Peanuts cartoon boasting about her Naturally Curly Hair! I didn't have to ever even Think about getting a perm again! I called this “G-d's Thank You Present” for my having survived that mess...

And I loved my curls... most of the time.

For, as all curlies know, curly hair has a Mind of Its Own, and is not always the easiest thing to live with and deal with. The slightest hint of dampness made it frizz to the point where I looked like I'd stuck my finger in a light socket. If it got even a little bit too long it went flat and limp, and wouldn't curl properly. And it changed back and forth from Wavy to Curly to Something In-Between to Totally Out Of Control... So, for the most part, for the next 20 years, I kept it fairly short, and easy-to-manage curly.

But, as you know, you always want what you don't have, and so, when I let it grow out a bit, I often got it blown and ironed into silky-straight, glass-like smoothness- which lasted for a day or two at most, and for a minute or two if it was damp outside, or- heaven forbid- raining.

When my husband met me in NYC in 2001 I was a Seriously High Maintenance Double-Process Blonde, which I often wore in a salon-done, blow-dried bob... But when we moved to West Virginia in 2002 and opened our Inn, Low Maintenance Hair became a necessity. The nearest good salon to us was over an hour away, and I almost never got there... and, as I have stated, I am definitely no hairstylist. But I had to look good for our guests! So I went back to my Naturally Curly (usually short) Hair- and my natural Mousy Brown color... periodically augmented with highlights or lowlights... and remained forever on the internet lookout for the Holy Grail Product(s) that would enable me to keep the ringlet curls I love, and stop them from turning into a mass of OOC frizz.

I have thus tried LOTS of curl styling products over the years, and my bathroom looks like a Sephora Outlet, LOL. I have also had several very expensive “curl cuts” at various salons, but wasn't particularly impressed by any of them. I had used Curl Keeper Original Liquid Styler, and Tweak, their cream hairspray, and I liked them, which is why I applied to do this "Curl Keeper Challenge"- I had never tried their “Refresh with Hold” Spray, and I wanted to see if these two products, used together, would be my “Holy Grail” hair duo for lasting curls- and it actually is!
I no longer have to use tons of hairspray to lacquer my curls into permanency in between shampoos!

The Facebook Live Party was a lot of fun to do, as I got to "see" some of my Curl Friends who I haven't seen in person in years!

I got to demonstrate the products and how I use them, we shared "curly hair horror stories", LOL, and then I sent off samples of Curl Keeper Original Liquid Styler to them so they can try it!
You can watch it here:

I ordered the Curl Keeper Treatment Shampoo, as it has "ColorKeeper Technology" and is safe for colored and chemically treated hair, and it strengthens hair, and I want to use it in conjunction with the Liquid Styler and Refresh Spray, as I continue on my "Learning to Love My Curls" journey!

Curly Hair Solutions has a lot of great products, both for adults and kids, which you can check out here: www.frizzoff.com

Loving the Ritual of (Good!) Karma from Rituals Cosmetics!

"Ritual of Karma" TryaBox

As a member of Tryazon: www.tryazon.com, the really excellent sampling program, I have been privileged to enjoy several "TryaBoxes" of Rituals Cosmetics bath products, and I think this one – the “Relaxation at Home” Ritual of Karma set- is my favorite! I actually learned about Rituals through Tryazon, and was first able to enjoy testing their Ritual of Sakura, with its delightful light cherry blossom scent that really brought back our Honeymoon days in Kyoto, Japan for me, and then their Ritual of Dao set, and I thoroughly enjoyed them both- and reviewed them on this blog: Ritual of Dao:  http://southernwestvirginia.blogspot.com/2019/11/rituals-for-holidays-creating-dao-spa.html  Ritual of Sakura: http://southernwestvirginia.blogspot.com/2019/09/rituals-sakura-collection-delicious.html

This time I had the opportunity to try the Ritual of Karma https://www.rituals.com/en-us/collection-story-karma.html, and I was seriously quite excited, as heaven knows we could all use some Good Karma right now, right?!  But I Was wondering: what does Karma (the good kind, naturally) smell like?! Spoiler Alert: Good Karma smells GREAT! Scented with Holy Lotus and White Tea, the Ritual of Karma fragrance is in the floral category, but way more interesting than “just” a floral scent. All the products truly smell delicious, and I truly look forward to getting into the bath with them!  The philosophy behind the “Ritual of Karma” products is that, “according to ancient Hindu belief, living with good intent attracts good karma. Say good words, think good thoughts, do good deeds, and keep the circle positive, because ultimately, you reap what you sow!” Sounds like just what we all need right about now, yes?! The Ritual of Karma collection aims to help you immerse yourself in the positive vibes of summer all year round, instantly enhancing your mood, and making you radiate "positive vibes", as well as a great scent!

There's a delightful little video on You Tube that shows how the Ritual of Karma can make you feel: https://youtu.be/B-YfvlRp7p0

Ritual of Karma Sugar Scrub
I have especially grown to love Rituals' Sugar Scrubs and Foaming Bath Gels, so I was delighted to be able try the Ritual of Karma Sugar Scrub:   https://www.sephora.com/product/rituals-the-ritual-karma-body-scrub-P463648, and Foaming Bath Gel:  https://www.sephora.com/product/rituals-the-ritual-karma-foaming-shower-gel-P463647as well as the Body Cream:   https://www.sephora.com/product/rituals-the-ritual-karma-body-cream-P463649and the three products really make for a delightful “spa” experience at home! It is “relaxation in a box”! Add a bath tub pillow, a scented candle (and yes, there is a Karma Candle...), and a glass of wine, and you are All Set!
This would be a GREAT gift for a good friend, too- I can't imagine anyone not loving this- and as Rituals products are not overly expensive, you can afford to treat friends, as well as yourself!
The Ritual of Karma Sugar Scrub, which is enriched with holy lotus, almond oil, and jojoba, is an absolute delight! I not only use it on my body- especially feet and knees and elbows- but as an exfoliator on my face and neck- it's that good! I MUCH prefer sugar scrubs to salt scrubs, as they never burn the way salt can, and so I truly enjoy Rituals' sugar scrubs. The scrub is made with fine sugar that has just enough exfoliating power to be effective without being rough, and it dissolves into your skin quickly and leaves it feeling silky smooth.
Ritual of Karma Foaming Bath Gel
The Ritual of Karma Foaming Bath Gel is super creamy and deliciously sensual! I have used a lot of bath gels in my time, and I have to say that Rituals makes the ones I like best! Their gel-to-foam technology is truly unique, and their foaming bath gels are the creamiest, and most luxurious ones I've ever used!
The Ritual of Karma Body Cream is rich and luxurious, but not greasy, and it absorbs super-fast. I use it all over, immediately on getting out of the tub (I'm a Total Tub Soak Gal...), and I especially like to use it on my feet, and then put on comfy socks to help it absorb...

Ritual of Karma Body Cream

I love to layer scented products, to make the fragrances last as long as possible, and so I am planning to treat myself to more products in this line: I especially want to get the Karma CandleHair And Body Mist, and the golden Body Shimmer Oil, which looks amazing!

Rituals products just launched on Sephora in September: https://www.sephora.com/brand/rituals, but if you want to see ALL the products they have, and ALL the different Rituals (and there are lots!), go to the Rituals website: https://www.rituals.com/en-us/home, which also has an Outlet page with discounted products from lines that they no longer have on the regular site: https://www.rituals.com/en-us/outlet

Another great thing to note is that Rituals products are happily free of the bad stuff, such as sulfates SLS and SLES, parabens, formaldehydes, formaldehyde-releasing agents, phthalates, mineral oil, retinyl palmitate, oxybenzone, coal tar, hydroquinone, triclosan, and triclocarban, and they contain less than one percent of synthetic fragrances. And their products are also cruelty-free!

I can honestly and highly recommend Rituals products, as well as Tryazon- its a Lot of fun being a member, and getting discover and try great new products like these- and share them!

Have you tried any Rituals products or given them as gifts?

What are your favorites? Tell me in the comments!

Rituals for the Holidays: Creating a Dao Spa Bath Experience!

Ritual of Dao
I was recently and very happily selected by Tryazon to try a selection of bath and shower products from Rituals: The Rituals for The Holidays "Ritual of Dao" line, and it has been a delightful experience! Earlier this fall I got to try several of the Ritual of Sakura (Japanese Cherry Blossom) scented products, and I loved them, as the scent is divine, and using them brings back wonderful memories of seeing the cherry blossoms in Japan, so I was Very happy to get to try several of the Dao products, which are scented with the light and subtle fragrance of White Lotus, and contain Yi Yi Ren, an herb used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for skin nourishing and healing, among other things. Rituals products are truly unique, and every Rituals Collection is based on a different philosophy; the Ritual of Dao collection is based on the Chinese philosophy of creating a balance between Yin and Yang, and a "harmonic flow" that relaxes, calms, and reduces stress. I have used Traditional Chinese Medicine for many years for my health, and found it to be truly excellent and reliable- it has 3,500 years of history behind it!- and Dan and I spent an amazing month traveling through China last year, and so this concept intrigued me, and as I could Really use some tranquility in my life right now, the idea of slowing down with a warm, scented bath was VERY appealing! I find fragrance very powerful, and I love to use perfumes, bath oils, home fragrance, candles, and other scented products to remind me of happy experiences! I have to say that the Ritual of Dao bath products do let me enjoy some wonderful and romantic memories of our time in China!

Rituals of Dao

The Dao Gift Box that arrived was lovely, elegant, and "upscale", and it would obviously make a delightful holiday present for just about anyone!
The four Dao products included in my box that I tried were the Shower Oil,  Foaming Shower Gel, Moisturizing Shampoo, and Body Cream, and together they really do make for a lovely, relaxing "spa" bath experience!
The Dao fragrance is very light and delicate, and is thus a great gift-giving option; I think that anyone who was gifted with these products would be extremely pleased- I know I was!

The Ritual of Dao Be Kind To Your Skin Body Cream has the lovely, light, and calming White Lotus fragrance, and I love the richness of the cream. The Rituals Body Creams don't irritate my skin or make me itch like many other creams do, and as I like to “layer” scented products, so the fragrance lasts as long as possible, I use this as a hand cream throughout the day (I keep it in my office), as well as using it as a body cream after bathing.
Since I like to layer scented products, I really enjoyed using the Ritual of Dao Moisturizing Shampoo. The scent is gentle and subtle, and I was Very happy that it's safe for color-treated hair, and free of parabens, sulfates, and silicone. It's enriched with Argan Oil, as well, and makes a creamy lather. As I didn't get the conditioner (yet!), I use a leave-in conditioner after I shampoo, as my hair needs the added moisture...
I LOVE the Ritual of Dao Shower Oil! I had never tried a Ritual Shower Oil before, and I really love this. I have always enjoyed using scented bath oils, and this is a great product to create a true “spa” bath or shower experience! The oil is creamy and moisturizing and leaves my skin silky (not greasy), and the Dao fragrance is delicate and relaxing. I like to “layer” all the Dao products, so I use this and the Shampoo, and then the Body Lotion after bathing.
The Ritual of Dao Foaming Shower Gel is my favorite Rituals product! Rituals' foaming cream shower gels have become my favorite bath and shower gels, as they are so luscious and creamy and moisturizing! They are really the best shower/bath gels I've ever used. The Dao White Lotus fragrance is light and calming, and this cream gel is the "star" of my Dao Bath Ritual!
As I mentioned, my husband and I were lucky enough to spend some time in China last year, and using these Ritual of Dao bath products creates a lovely "me time" experience that brings back some wonderful memories, especially of a romantic cruise we took on the Yangtze River, and the small villages we visited!
Do you use scented products to bring back memories?
Let me know in the comments!

Rituals Sakura Collection: a delicious Japanese-inspired bath ritual!

Sakura "Try Me" Box products
I was happily selected to try a Rituals Sakura (Japanese Cherry Blossom) "Try Me" TryaBox, and I must say that I am really delighted with it! First of all, it smells divine- even the box smelled divine! (For just that reason it's a great gift- it's so much fun to open something that smells so good even before you know what it is!) And the three products are REALLY great, and while luxurious, not expensive, and I will be buying them- and some of the other products in the Collection, too! Included in the "Try Me" box are the Sakura Sugar Scrub, Foaming Shower Gel, and Body Cream, and with them I created a lovely, relaxing, and sensual little bath "ritual" for myself, that brings back wonderful memories of our Honeymoon in Japan and seeing the Cherry Blossoms! I love the Sakura Sugar Scrub, which is a great but gentle exfoliator (I much prefer sugar scrubs to salt scrubs, as sugar scrubs don't burn...), and smells delicious, and the Sakura Body Cream, which is moisturizing and creamy, and has the same delightful scent, but best surprise was the unique Sakura Foaming Shower Gel, as it's really creamy and luscious on the skin, and truly moisturizing, which many shower gels aren't! Rituals has many different collections (check them all out here: https://www.rituals.com/en-us/about-rituals.html), but I wanted to try the Sakura Ritual specifically because I have Very happy memories of seeing the Cherry Blossoms in Kyoto with Dan during our Honeymoon, and recapturing a bit of that magical experience seemed like a lovely thing to be able to do...
The Cherry Blossoms in Kyoto...
The Cherry Blossom Festival in Japan is world famous, and rightfully so: That springtime awakening of nature in Japan is a glorious but fleeting thing, precious because it is over all too soon, & it symbolizes that beauty is momentary, and that life must be enjoyed... When Dan and I were in Kyoto (for 2 days!) during our Honeymoon in the early spring, we knew that we were too early for the blossoms, and wouldn't get to see them... and so, when we woke up in Kyoto that morning and he called me to the window of our hotel room to see the trees that had just burst into flower, my heart skipped a beat!  Ritual's Sakura Collection is inspired by that tradition, and includes nourishing Organic Rice Milk as well as cherry blossom, and it's truly delightful- and would make a Great gift! Here is the link to the complete Sakura Collection- not only bath products, but other lovely things, including Hair & Body Mist, Shampoo and Conditioner, Shower Oil., Fragrance Sicks, and Candles- and I want them all! :-) And luscious as they are, they are NOT expensive, so I just may be able to get them all, too!  https://www.rituals.com/en-us/collection-story-sakura.html

My Annual Contest & Sweepstakes Thank You!

My six faithful readers know that I am a Terrible Sweeper/Contest Enterer, and that as a year ends I like to thank the wonderful companies and organizations who have made my wins possible! My sweeping hobby started 15 years ago when I entered Oil of Olay's "My Most Romantic Summer" Contest and won it- and a fabulous, luxe trip for Dan and I to the Golden Door Spa in Arizona! And I immediately thought: "I can do this!" LOL I began entering sweeps and contests with a passion bordering on OCD, mostly in the wee hours, night after night, when many of my friends were playing Farmville or Candy Crush. And they laughed at me... until I started winning more trips with plane tickets! To date I've won us 6 trips, including ones to Israel, Vietnam and Chile, as well as to San Diego, hot-air ballooning and wine-tasting in Virginia, and that first one to Arizona! I've also won a number of business contests for the Elkhorn Inn, including this year's SCORE Business Championship Award, as well as other truly splendid things, such as $1000 handbags, $500 shoes, fine jewelry, and a Big Green Egg smoker for Chef Dan- things that, honestly, we never would have been able to enjoy, otherwise!
One of the coolest things about "sweeping" is that in the process of entering to win things, you learn about products you didn't know about, and if you're lucky, you get to try them for free! And if not, you often go and buy them, anyway! (The down-side is you learn about new products you really want- things you didn't even know existed 5 minutes before. LOL)
And so on to this year's Thank Yous:

The Absolute BIGGEST win of all this year was the Elkhorn Inn & Theatre winning the SCORE Business Championship for West Virginia! I only learned of the contest about a week before it ended, and right before our February vacation! I wrote up the story of our Inn and why I believed it to be a unique business, and submitted it, knowing that our entry had to get 100 votes to even be considered... and while Dan drove us to Florida, I Facebooked and Tweeted on my mobile incessantly, urging people to please vote for us, in the hope that I'd get that 100 votes! Amazingly, in one week we had over 10,600 votes- and we won! The Elkhorn Inn was awarded a $1000 gift certificate for Sam's Club, and we used it to get Chef Dan a brand new refrigerator, and I received an all-expense-paid trip to Houston, Texas to attend the SCORE Business Champion Awards Ceremony and Training, as well! The day the winners were announced, WVVA News television turned up at the Elkhorn Inn, and the amazing outpouring of wonderful media coverage for the Inn, and for our 15 years of promoting McDowell County, West Virginia tourism, has been nothing short of fabulous! We were covered by WVVA News television five times, for everything from planting our Sunflower Meadow, to having Mark Twain at the Inn this fall; we were featured on Hoppy Kercheva's Talkline Radio (thanks, in great measure, to Homer Hickam), there were articles on the Elhorn Inn on the Trains Magazine Blog and ATV Illustrated, features on the West Virginia Tourism website, and the Inn was featured as  one of the Top Ten Most Romantic Getaways for Seniors, and one of the Top Eight Fly Fishing Getaways, too! I even got myself a "Business Champion" Pink Satin Sash to celebrate! :-)

Last year I wrote about my mother having successfully beaten breast cancer more than 20 years ago for the "Tough Enough To Wear Pink" campaign for breast cancer awareness, and this year I was gifted with a gorgeous pair of "Tough Enough To Wear Pink" Cowboy Boots by Twisted X Boots. I wore them in Texas on a FEMA disaster response deployment, and, amazingly, a lot of big, tough Texas men complimented me on my "great boots"- and they ALL knew they were for Breast Cancer Awareness!

Wearing my Twisted X Boots in Texas on a FEMA deployment

I won a delicious Bokksu Box of Japanese treats and teas, including the fabulous Green Tea Kit Kats I'd been Dyyyying to try! Bokksu is unlike any other Japanese snack box! They are totally in love with Japanese snacks, and they craft truly authentic Japanese gourmet experiences for  Members around the world. Their collections are sourced directly from artisanal producers in Japan, and you won't find their delicious snacks and teas anywhere else! If you love all things Japanese like I do, you will LOVE Bokksu!

This year I won a number of fine beauty products and cosmetics, and perhaps there's a message in there somewhere... LOL

Orogold

Revlon Matte Lipsticks also from Elle

Vichy Winter Skin Care
Beessential Body Care

One of the loveliest things I won this year was a Body Care Gift Tin from Beessential  and having now discovered them, these are Definitely products I'll be buying again, both for myself and gifts! Beessential makes natural skin care products by hand from start to finish, from their own bee hives! They uses fresh, pure honey, beeswax and Propolis from their family farm in Ohio, and blend them with other natural ingredients, such as Coconut, Olive & Virgin Hemp Oils. They make everything themselves, and all their natural body washes, body creams and hair care products are free of harsh chemicals like sulfates, parabens and PEG.

Vera Bradley Backpack

Thanks to being a "Crowdtapper", I often get to try new products, many of which I've grown to love. This year my favorite was Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day Honeysuckle Essential Oil Body Wash, which smells and feels DIVINE! Mrs. Meyers makes bath and household products with essential oils from flowers and herbs that not only smell fabulous, they really work! They have a gazillion garden-fresh scents, too, include Lavender, Lemon Verbena, Basil, Geranium and many, many others!
Mrs. Meyer's Honeysuckle Essential Oil Body Wash

I was sent a stylish Vera Bradley backpack from Vogue, for being an "Influencer" :-)

Most recently I won a really fabulous $250 gift certificate for custom-made pillows from The Pillow Collection   thanks to Havenly, and I am truly excited about this, as I have wanted outdoor pillows for the Inn's front porch for a long time! This was a Great Hanukkah present, and picking out pillows will be my Spring Decorator Fun!

PUR "Love Your Selfie2" Makeup Palette

I won a Fabulous "Love Your Selfie 2" makeup palette from Pur Cosmetics!

Flight 001

This was a GREAT win for a gal who travels a lot- both for business, such as FEMA disaster response operations, and for pleasure with Dan when I can! Flight 001  is, literally, a one-stop shop for the traveler, with luggage, bags, adapters, in-flight comforts, bottles, containers, Spacepaks, Go Clean, Seatpaks, and other cool travel things! I won Spacepacks, among other things, and they are so great!

Yeti Tumbler

I also won a YETI tumbler- and let me tell you, this is No Ordinary Tumbler! This is a $30 Tumbler with a captial T and a BACKSTORY! This Tumbler is a LIFESTYLE! This Tumbler is an Aspirational Tumbler! It's the Entry Level Product on your way up to the $1299 Yeti Tundra Cooler! While I was deployed to Texas, I had the chance to visit the "home" of Yeti, their Official Flagship store in Austin, where I got 2 hats as an award for having eaten my sticky-fingered way thru Texas, getting stamps in my "BBQ Passport" along the way!
Me, doing the Yeti Beer Thing in Austin!

Arrow Rivet Gun

And finally, I managed to win something for Dan- and at Christmas time, too: an Arrow Rivet Gun! And it even came with rivets! This is probably THE ONLY TOOL that DIY Dan didn't have, and he was thrilled!
